On Monday December 5th, I was given the great opportunity to listen to the fabulous Much Music personality, Sarah Taylor, and the wonderful producer, Dee Hambly, speak about their journey to Ethiopia this past September to film a documentary about the green drought and famine which is occurring in eastern Africa. Accompanying them on this magnificent journey was none other than Rosemary McCartney, the CEO and President of Plan Canada. Throughout this heart felt and life changing journey, Sarah and Dee describe their amazement and astonishment of the human strengths and spirit.
When asked the question, what was most surprising when you got to Ethiopia; both replied with the simple answer - the strength of the human spirit and the smiling faces that surrounded them when in Ethiopia, even though the country was in a state of emergency. The drought last spring had a major impact on farming in the rural areas of the country, which has now turned into famine, due to the lack of food that grew this past spring.
When watching the Much Music special, Sarah In Ethiopia, you are able to grasp the current situation in Ethiopia. You are able to see true poverty and devastation, but also feel the sense of community which has arisen from the current situation and strength that Ethiopians contain.
I cannot fully explain the emotional journey that the 30 minute documentary takes you on, because it is one too great to describe in words. The visual content of the film and the personal stories told bring tears to your eyes, but at the same time warmth to your heart. This story is one only Sarah, Rosemary and Dee can truly tell.
I highly recommend watching this documentary! Here is the link: http://www.muchmusic.com/tv/specials/ethiopia/
