What is Plan Canada all about?

Children are at the heart of everything we do. Plan is a child-centred community development organization. We work with children, their families, communities, organizations and local governments to bring about positive change.

Recognition from Clarington Mayor

Blog image posted by Corey
Back in October, I blogged about receiving the Leading Girls Building Communities Award from my MPP and MP. A few weeks ago, members of the Clarington Council heard that I got this award and invited me to a council meeting. I was very thrilled but also nervous! I'd be in a room with many powerful people, including the mayor!
When I arrived at the meeting, every member of council congratulated me. They were eager to meet me and offer their support. Mayor Adrian Foster even presented a certificate on behalf of Clarington Council recognizing my awards and accomplishments. It was a great night and I'm even more inspired to not only work with youth, but adults too. I want to be able to raise issues to council and help find solutions.

The truth.

I wrote a blog, my first blog a while back. I'm not an avid blogger but I do love to write so I gave it a chance! It was a great day for me so as I sat in front of my father's computer screen I wondered upon what I should write about. I knew it should somehow introduce who I was and the only thing I could think of was how I became the leader, the person that I was on that 'happy' day. And how did I become that leader? The truth is that it was because of Because I am a Girl's Girl's Speakers Bureau. No, no.. I am definitely not juicing this. I don't suck up to organizations, campaigns, people or really just anything in general. Honesty is my best and worst quality. So as I was saying, I began to write about how being apart of this group of amazing young women really changed my life. At first it was interesting and intimidating, but as I began to feel comfortable and 'one' with the rest I began to realize my own potential. The girl I was before the Girls Speakers Bureau was one I had never really been proud of. The only thing that really changed was the fact that I began to fully appreciate myself and highlight all that made me special. Get that? Not weird!

Let us know what steps you are taking to help change the world.

Give us some ideas on how you or someone you know is trying to make a change for the better either with themselves or for the world.

we want to change the future the for women in this group we believe as women and young lady's that just because we are the opposite sex from the males does not mean we half to be treated opposite from them. As women we believe we are just as capable as men so we dont understand why we half to be treated the way some women are. So who ever joins this group beleive the same thing and will help the world one girl at a time

The First Movie Trailer

While sitting in the jury for the ViewFinder's International Film Festival for Youth, I got the opportunity to watch this amazing, beautiful, eye opening documentary on the lives of children in Iraq. When Mark Cousin's team travelled to Goptapa in the Kurdish region of Iraq, they provide the children living there with experiences like none they would ever have encountered before. Not only do they bring cinema into the children's lives by providing free outdoor showings of Hollywood classics, such as ET, but they provide the children with the opportunity to create their own stories. Equipped with handheld videocams, the children travel around Goptapa, telling their stories, which are then integrated into this stunning documentary. I wish there was a link to the film online, so that you could all watch it, but I guess the trailer will have to do. If you ever get the opportunity to watch this film, please do. Tell all your friends about it, because it is absolutely amazing. It demonstrates the power of filmmaking on many levels, while exposing the creativity of children and showing it's importance in the creation of community and change. Don't forget the tissues!
