Girls have a right to education

Imagine if girls in Canada had to stay behind while their brothers went to school. Check out this audio slideshow about Plan's work to help all girls access education.

The Bigger Picture

The event is over. Classes have resumed. Now what? Does the energy disappear? How do I keep this going? Maybe the students won't take action and Mariatu's message meant nothing.
But somehow my peers manage to surprise me and put my worries to rest. It's been a few days since the event and I'm still getting very nice Facebook messages and emails from students and school board staff. I even received a hand-written card from the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board chairperson, Diane Lloyd, which is extremely thoughtful.

Here are some facts I shared before the event via school announcements:
-70% of the one billion people living in extreme poverty are women and girls
-Women aged 15-44 are more at risk from rape and domestic violence than from cancer, motor accidents, war and malaria
-Approximately 80,000 women suffer rape and attempted rape every year
-More than 60 million women are "missing" from the world today as a result of gender-selective abortions and female infanticide
-Girls who receive higher education are less likely to be married before age 19 than girls who aren't in school

Education in Africa

This is the whiteboard animation project on a social justice issue. This student's social justice issue was education in the developing world with a focus on girls eduction in Africa.

It's a Girl! Documentary Film - Official Trailer

'It's a girl!' isn't always a joyful statement. In India, China and many other parts of the world today, girls are killed, aborted and abandoned simply because they are girls. The United Nations estimates as many as 200 million girls are missing in the world today because of this so-called "gendercide".

Recognition from Clarington Mayor

Blog image posted by Corey
Back in October, I blogged about receiving the Leading Girls Building Communities Award from my MPP and MP. A few weeks ago, members of the Clarington Council heard that I got this award and invited me to a council meeting. I was very thrilled but also nervous! I'd be in a room with many powerful people, including the mayor!
When I arrived at the meeting, every member of council congratulated me. They were eager to meet me and offer their support. Mayor Adrian Foster even presented a certificate on behalf of Clarington Council recognizing my awards and accomplishments. It was a great night and I'm even more inspired to not only work with youth, but adults too. I want to be able to raise issues to council and help find solutions.
