[video] Watch this video about the partnership between Plan and Nokia.

The Haiti Earthquake

[video] On January 12th, 2010 a deadly earthquake struck the island nation of Haiti. With more than 230 000 dead and 3-5 million people directly affected, the quake was one of the worst disasters on record. With the help of MTV's Nicole Holeness this video will show you all about Haiti and the impacts of the earthquake. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Plan at youth@plancanada.ca. It may have happened some time ago, and the news may have moved on, but it will take years for Haiti to rebuild. Please keep Haiti in your thoughts.

Youth participation in the spotlight

[video] Plan took a youth media team made up of young journalists from West Africa and Europe to the European Development Days 2008 forum, held in Strasbourg 15-17 November. Plan held a youth forum on the first day where young people were able to meet each other and exchange views on their experiences of participating in local governance structures. Plan believes that child participation enables children to take an active role in the decisions that affect them.

Silent Suffering

[video] In West Africa an entire generation of children have witnessed extreme levels of violence and horror. HIV, Civil War, and Child Trafficking have left these youth, many of whom are orphans and former child soldiers, scarred and traumatized. Plan Liberia provides counselling for children most in need. Lifeline counselling teaches children to balance good and bad memories and helps them move forward and see their life and future in a more positive light.

Haiti and Dominican Republic border story

[video] Plan is working with several special Peace Camps for youth and children in the border areas of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The camps are designed to tackle the prejudices in both communities and give young Haitians and Dominicans a chance to learn about each others cultures and way of life.

Girls skills centre training

[video] Girls who formerly worked as maids in Senegal are now being given a chance to succeed in life by attending vocational skills training classes. The girls learn how to sew, run a household, tie dye, knit and conserve vegetables. They now aspire to run their own businesses and pass on their skills to other girls.

Escaping the violence

[video] Colombia's 40-year armed conflict is known simply as "La Violencia" or The Violence. In the last 20 years alone, more than 70,000 people have been killed in the violence and 3 million people have been forcibly displaced from their homes. Plan funds an orchestra project in a neighbourhood made up of generations of people affected by the violence. On of the people benefitting from this project is Jose Luis, who has sought refuge form the violence in the music.

Child-centred disaster risk reduction

[video] Plan projects in Jakarta teach students how to minimize risks during natural disasters such as flooding. Children draw maps of their community and highlight areas of risk and escape routes away from danger. They also take part in emergency evacuation drills to prepare themselves if the worst was to happen.

Colombia youth participation

[video] Sebastian, 16, lives in a vulnerable community with high levels of sanitation, water and housing problems. With the support of Plan, Sebastian participated in youth group activities to address the community water and waste concerns. Now, he is respected for his energy, intelligence and drive when it comes to tackling local issues.
