While sitting in the jury for the ViewFinder's International Film Festival for Youth, I got the opportunity to watch this amazing, beautiful, eye opening documentary on the lives of children in Iraq. When Mark Cousin's team travelled to Goptapa in the Kurdish region of Iraq, they provide the children living there with experiences like none they would ever have encountered before. Not only do they bring cinema into the children's lives by providing free outdoor showings of Hollywood classics, such as ET, but they provide the children with the opportunity to create their own stories. Equipped with handheld videocams, the children travel around Goptapa, telling their stories, which are then integrated into this stunning documentary.
I wish there was a link to the film online, so that you could all watch it, but I guess the trailer will have to do. If you ever get the opportunity to watch this film, please do. Tell all your friends about it, because it is absolutely amazing. It demonstrates the power of filmmaking on many levels, while exposing the creativity of children and showing it's importance in the creation of community and change.
Don't forget the tissues!
